    I have been involved in policy engagement with civil society bodies and the UK Government. For example:

    – I am currently writing policy papers for the Young Fabians;

    – I co-wrote a submission to the UK Government’s consultation on proposed reforms to the Flood Re insurance scheme (with David Schultz, University of Manchester);

    – I have given evidence to the UK Parliament’s Risk Assessment and Planning Committee inquiry on resilience to extreme risks and emergencies;

    – I was on an international team of scientists who co-authored a background paper on the seismic vulnerabilities of ‘soft story’ and non-ductile buildings, for the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).

    I do other kinds of engagement and outreach, often in interdisciplinary contexts. I was a judge for the 2021 Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition run by EERI. This involved dozens of engineering students representing universities in North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

    My podcast, The Provocateur, features interviews with rising scholars from the UK, mainland Europe and North America. I have completed 50 episodes of this series, with more in production. If you are an early career researcher and interested in participating, don’t hesitate to contact me!

    If you know of any opportunities to engage in work for the media and public bodies, it would be great to hear from you. Please get in touch via email or by using the form above.

    NB: The views expressed in my policy work are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of my university or of any third parties.
